Module Description:
Substance use disorders and psychiatric illnesses frequently co-occur; those with comorbid disorders have poorer prognosis, and worse treatment outcomes, including higher relapse rates, shorter time to relapse of substance use, and more hospitalizations than those without co-occurring psychiatric illnesses. It is often difficult to differentiate independent from secondary disorders and treatment planning can be more challenging.

This presentation will provide clinicians with tools to screen and assist with diagnosis of psychiatric illnesses in those with co-occurring substance use disorders, and will discuss treatment of common psychiatric comorbidities in this population. Covered topics include: the epidemiology of co-occurring psychiatric illness and substance use disorders, comorbidity theories, and clinical relevance, including diagnostic and treatment implications. The module also utilizes three case vignettes to highlight specific diagnostic and treatment challenges, and presents up-to-date treatment recommendations.
