Opioid Agonist Therapy: The Duration Dilemma

March 10, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Edwin A. Salsitz, MD, FASAM | Medical Director, Office-Based Opioid Therapy Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Mount Sinai Beth Israel New York, NY

Webinar Description:
Modern opioid agonist therapy was developed 50 years ago at the Rockefeller University, by Drs. Dole, Nyswander, and Kreek. From the outset, the issue of duration of treatment has been controversial. Despite overwhelming evidence with methadone, and now with buprenorphine, that maintenance provides better outcomes and is safer for patients, most patients with Opioid Use Disorder are not receiving Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), and those who are often are advised to taper and discontinue medication.

This session will review the evidence for maintenance versus withdrawal and will address stigma, which is often the reason patients withdraw from effective medication assisted treatment.
